WHO DO YOU SAY THAT I AM? |
|
Jesus Christ is singularly the most influential man in all of human history. Even 2,000 years after he was crucified as a criminal in a distant province of the Roman empire, more than 1 billion people belong to the Church that He founded. His Name and Gospel have spanned the globe, and countless thousands have willingly accepted death rather than deny their faith in Him. His followers profess and believe the He has risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all eternity at the right hand of God the Father in heaven. |

So who is Jesus of Nazareth? When Jesus went into the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is?” They replied, “Some say, John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” Simon Peter said in reply, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” Jesus said to him in reply, “Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father.” - The Gospel according to St. Matthew 16:13-17 See also the parallel accounts in Mark 8:27 & Luke 9:18
So what are people today to think of Jesus? What his been left behind for us today are the Holy Scriptures—the Word of God, inspired by the Holy Spirit, and Sacred Tradition—truths that have been revealed and handed down through the generations. Four men, who we call Evangelists, recorded for us (under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit) some of the words and events of Jesus’ life. Each of these men had something unique that he wanted to tell the world about the person Jesus Christ. |
